The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation [1] is pleased to share the news that Milen Ruskov is one of the laureates of the European Union Prize for Literature [2] in 2014! Ruskov’s second novel Thrown into Nature was the inaugural winner of the Contemporary Bulgarian Novel Contest co-run by the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation and Open Letter Books. The book was published in the U.S. in 2011, and has generated many positive reviews. Ruskov was a visiting speaker at the Sozopol Fiction Seminars twice and a winner of the EKF’s Krastan Dyankov Translation Award in 2009 in his capacity of acclaimed novelist and a literary translator.

His award-winning, best-selling and fully-staged novel Height (Възвишение, Janet 45, 2011) is the Bulgarian book awarded with this year’s EUPL.

In November 2013, the novel became the Missing Slate’s magazine pick for Story of the Week, and thanks to Christopher Buxton’s translation in English the featured excerpt could be read here [3].

  • NB for publishers: EU’s Creative Europe program encourages translation of the winning books in other languages by providing publishing grants.
  • Stats: So far, financial support has been allocated for the translation of 37 former EUPL-winning books into a range of European languages, making a combined total of 70 translations.

The Contemporary Bulgarian Writers Novel contest of the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation is supported by the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
